A neglected center | English Opening, Caro-Kann Defensive System – Standard Chess #60

I late-joined a Rapid tournament while I was livestreaming on 10-9-21. Highlighted is the 2nd game I played in the event. I had the black pieces and played a Caro-Kann Defensive System in response to the English Opening. It was on my 6th move that I began thinking about the deployment of my queen bishop and white’s reply to it with Qb3 (pinpointing the newly weakened b7 pawn). Only after those thoughts of standard development of another piece did I recognize a new move that was possible as a result of black not yet occupying the center with a pawn. White’s 6th move ultimately lead to black gaining space in the center, and the game proceeding unconventionally. The Rapid time control for this game is 10 minutes with a 0 second increment.
