In this video lesson, GM Igor Smirnov will share with you a dangerous opening weapon for White against the first moves 1.e4 e5, which is one of the most common responses of Black. It is the Scotch Gambit (from the Scotch Opening) which arises after the following opening moves: 1.e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 exd4 4.Bc4.
Instead of taking the pawn back with 4.Nxd4, White plays in gambit style, sacrificing the pawn, for rapid development and great attacking opportunities. You’ll enjoy this line a lot because it is solid, aggressive, and easy to learn.
Watch the video lesson as GM Igor Smirnov walks you through Black’s common responses: the tempting 4…Bb4+, protecting the pawn with 4…Bc5, and the more solid 4…Nf6 that gives a Two Knights Defense setup.
You will also learn a tricky line, playing the aggressive 4.Ng5, which can be used against beginner-level and intermediate players, especially in blitz games.

At 17:14 you can simply play f4 right away 😀
If instead of Be7 black plays Bc5 white cannot play Nd2 because of BxNd4. What do you recommend? I left a 👍
Wonderful opening, I will give it a trail.
Thanks for this one Igor. I used to use the Italian Opening in my younger days, but you can get situations where a pawn gets in front of you strong c4 Bishop in some lines. With the Scotch Gambit, you don't have such problems. Thanks for the video on playing against it with black. I didn't realise it was as potent as that. It makes you think twice about Fried liver ideas. Thank you.
Chang this opening name to Dirty Opening instead
At 4:25, what about bishop A5 ? Seems like everything is better for black
best thing about gm igor smirnov is he teaches variations for all possible moves until endgame sometimes, like which pawn to push in that position. i have faced almost many moves and crushed my opponents using these tactics and traps.
Thank you GM for the interesting gambit. My son always enjoys watching your videos. Could you please post pirc defence for black ?
please make a lichess study of this 🙂
😆

Hello , thank you for this opening , can you advice i did'nt succed in this game : 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. d4 exd4 4. Ng5 h6 5. Nxf7 Kxf7 6. Bc4+ Kg6 7. Qg4+ Kh7 8. Qf5+ g6 9. Qf7+ Bg7 10. Bxh6 (10. I have a question to minute 4:25: Bb4+ is explained as a mistake but if after the pawn exchange black plays Ba5, which is the most natural move to keep attacking c3, there is not much white can do. The bishop is covered by the knight so no Qd5 trick and white does not seem to have much compensation for the pawn.
At 4:00, I don't think the queen take F7 mate is unstoppable. The knight to H6 allows castling after the bishop takes.
Hello i am 800 level player and i tried this gambit against several opponents but they go for lolli variation of this gambit which is Nxd5 and i don't know the counter to it. Can you please make a video on that variation
Good day Igor
May I please ask you if it is possible to show the moves a bit slower, bacause I am a blind person and struggle a bit to keep up. Please if it is possible and I like your way of play.
Greetings Paulie
At 7:32 you can actually take the queen by moving the bishop to c7. 👀
I have learned so much watching just a few of your videos. So easy to follow, understand, and remember! Thank you! New sub here.
'Even Magnus Carlsen, if you happen to face him'…almost certainly not 🤣😂
Great..
Hi Igor what do you recommend against the Sicilian? I find your videos interesting and have aggressive ideas.
All the best from Athens,
Giorgos ( George)
My unknown opponent 1600 ranked defeated me repeatedly by scotch gambit, now following your anti gambit I have come to know how to play. Thanks
How does Vienna Gambit compare in effectiveness with the Scotch Gambit? Which is easier to play, with less theory? And which is more aggressive?
Castling 🥲
What if after Bc4 you get a response D5? That looks like a good counter.
Interesting! What's the best move, when blacks play pawn d5 (early move), to block white Bishop on c4
Great video, but: is mate really unstoppable at 4:05? What about pawn to d8? Maybe I am missing something…
Nice video
Please make videos on scotch game defence for black
@ 4:13 the game is not over. Just castle and the game goes on. Am I missing something?
Why not moving the king to e7 instead of e8 at 1:20 ?
Ekscellen video,gm Igor Smirnov.
what about 4. knight g5, h6, 5. knight f7, king f7:, 6. bischoph c4+, king g6 and after h7???
Das heißt das Schachspiel hat sich damit wiederlegt. Mit dem Springerzug auf Springer g5 gewinnt weiß immer!
Believe me, you're the most the most underrated chess YouTuber while explaining Gambits and openings
this opening actually crushes everyone below 1000 elo I'm winning every game in 9 moves
What if in the bb4 chapter if white protects the checkmate with a rook?
after Bxh6 in the Be7 retreat line , doesn’t castle get rid of mate?
Nice! A lot of amateur stuff (gimmicks) in the first half but I suppose its good to see for beginners. I enjoyed the second half of the video. The Haxo gambit (Bc5) and the Greco Gambit were educational. Thanks!
Always analyzing lines where black ignores discovered checks and pins, etc. Of course black is always losing to your analysis. smh. I see players following your videos in their games all the time and they quickly fail when your discovered checks and pins are anticipated.
Sir in 1. e4 e5 2.nf3 nf6 3.d4 exd4 4.bc4 bc5 5.c3 Nf6 6.e5 d5 7.Bb5 Ne4 8.cxd4 Bb4+ 9.Bd2 Bxd2 10.Nxd2 Nxd2 11.Qxd2…What if they do not do castling what if they play Bd7 what do we do???… Thanks Sir….(:
Does anyone know where are the databases he uses to see other games' opening?
What if black doesn't takes the pawn at the start?
Best teacher in the YouTube chess game
Can't tell how many games I have won in bullets with this opening
Black QF6 and everything fall apart:D
What if in last variation ,opponent takes knight to e7 instead of f6 what lines you recommend?
Great instruction as always. But nobody EVER takes the D4 pawn…
This is great. Is it possible to get a video on how best to defend against it???
What if at 0:54 black plays f6 with the pawn
