The French Defense is one of the fundamental openings and a common defensive strategy against white’s first move 1.e4. In this video, IM Andrey Ostrovskiy is sharing with you some of the major ideas and plans in the French Defense. The main focus of this video is to give you an overview of the basic ideas, strategies and plans for both sides in the different lines of the French Defense.

The French Defense is characterized by the following moves:

1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5

White claims the center, while black challenges the e4-pawn. After 2…d4, we can enter various variations and the most important ones are shown in the video.

  1. I needed this. I try to learn the French with Giris Course on chessable, but it was more studying moves than understanding what to do in the middlegame. Now that I have gained a solid idea of the main attacks, I can restart learning in a new light.

  4. If this is a lesson "for Black," it would have been nice to view the board from Black's point of view.

  5. A digital board representation would be good. Hard to process things with the angle you are shooting the board from at least for me and I can't be the only one. Just a suggestion
