The Ruy Lopez is an incredibly popular opening at all levels of chess, from the amateur player up to top level grandmasters. It is considered as one of the best openings for white after the moves 1.e4 e5.

In the fifth video of the series, IM Andrey Ostrovskiy is sharing with you the Modern Steinitz Defense in the Ruy Lopez. This variation is named after the first world champion Wilhelm Steinitz. The main focus of this video is to show you the main strategies and plans for both sides in the different variations.

The Ruy Lopez opening is characterized by the following move order:

1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5

Black can either play 3…d6 which leads to the original Steinitz Defense or 3…a6 which leads to the Modern Steinitz Defense.

  1. I am thankful to you. Contents are very rich and your wonderful explanations help to understand complicated position.

  2. Love that you guys use a real board. Great content

  3. More than the opening, this video taught me so much about pawn structures

  4. At 10:18 , can't white just trade bishop for bishop instead of giving away the rook?

  5. Great content – I am learning how to play with the Ruy Lopez and I really like the variations you show. Rich with ideas!

  6. I literally spent over 2 hours painstakingly running scenario after scenario after each move of any piece, either side. I was able to come up with some unique stuff and some things I missed – but it was a great learning experience. I was too spent for the second half of the vid and just let it play through, not pausing every move as I did before…. haah (glutton for punishment)

  7. 6:43 "he or she". Thank you. I bristle when I hear everyone just say "he" for the players. Women play too.

  8. 14:02 I have a doubt, if blacks light square bishop is eliminated then his light squares are vulnerable , our own light Square bishop is also eliminated then why isn't our light squares aren't a big threat???

  9. It would be better to show board from black's perspective
